What is defined in Newman 2002 is exactly what is defined in the program's documentation for the scalar assortativity coefficient, in the special case where the graph is undirected and the scalar properties are the degrees.

The reference you want is Phys. Rev. E 67, 026126 (2003), also by Newman, were all this is discussed in detail.
