I tried uninstalling and reinstalling boost different ways and to no avail. Definitely out of ideas. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
Take a look in the config.log file, which will tell you the exact error.
Maybe you forgot to enable the python27 variant when building boost? If not, I recommend you open a ticket at https://trac.macports.org/newticket, so the macports people can take a look at this.
